A day at Elder
From the door to the goodbye
Mornings and school days share the same first hours.
Step 1: At the door
Teachers are at the side door when the building opens. Each child is greeted by name and signed in. A parent says goodbye at the door, and a teacher takes it from there.
Step 2: On the rug
The first circle: a Bible story, a song and the plan for the day. Twos keep it short and sit on a teacher's lap if they like.
Step 3: At low tables
Drawing, counting with beans, painting and clay. Teachers write down what each child worked on for the note to families.
Step 4: Outside
The playground has a sand table and a low climber. Teachers count heads on the way out and on the way in.
Step 5: Snack and lunch
A blessing, a simple snack and, for school-day children, lunch from home. Children wipe their own places.
Step 6: Rest
School-day children rest on a mat for as long as they need. Some sleep, and some look at a book.
